Gilles Hébert (with Sheila Spence/ Frieso Boning) | from Pull Freight No. 6- Comic Relief
2015 | silkscreen print | 17.75 x 21.25 in (framed)

Gilles Hébert is Pull Freight, an on-going project of which this precise and pristine silk-screen is an essential aspect. Pull Freight is based on the development of 25 characters in elaborate and detailed editions. They are poetically divided into individual assemblages built from matching and arranged archival Cuban photographs with the appropriate ephemera that reflect on the transitory nature of significance.

Gilles Hébert is an artist and art institutional director currently based in Winnipeg. Through a process of narrative association, Hébert transforms found photographs and unique-one-of-a-kind ephemera, which he has been collecting for over three years, into stories. Hébert received his BA from the University of Manitoba and also studied at both the Ontario College of Art and Design and the University of Toronto. He has been director at art institutions across Canada, including the Plug In, Winnipeg; the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; the Art Gallery of Windsor, Windsor; and the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton. Hébert’s most recent solo exhibition, PullFreight, opened at Actual Gallery, Winnipeg in 2015 and Espacio Abierto, Havana, Cuba in 2016. He is the 2002 recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Gold Medal and was awarded the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Arts Celebrated Alumni Award in 2010.
