Description:

Throughout 2018, Artspace hosted a series of solo exhibitions featuring the work of Indigenous women working in and across various disciplines within the canon of Canadian contemporary art. Each exhibition was accompanied by a publication with writing by an Indigenous woman working in the field of contemporary art and a foreword by curator and scholar Erin Sutherland.

In part, Artspace’s 2018 programming was inspired by a 2001 essay written by Mohawk artist and curator Skawennati titled “5 Suggestions For Better Living,” as well as a 1992 performance/statement from James Luna called “Will You Call Me In ’93.” Both works consider what sustained institutional commitment and support for Indigenous arts professionals by settler-driven arts organizations should look like. Artspace is dedicated to answering these calls to action and was thrilled to offer an exciting year of programming. This publication was the second in a series of five; all publications were launched at the public openings for their respective exhibitions.
