Federico Herrero | Vocal
2017 | Oil, acrylic and marker on Canvas | 15.75 x 11.5" |
Federico Herrero approaches the landscape and urban environment as both the subject and the surface for his work. Incorporating shape, colour, pattern and graphic lines, his paintings often move beyond the canvas to floors, walls, and architectural structures. We are fortunate to present this excellent example. Representative of Herrero’s world-renowned practice, Vocal (2017) speaks to Herrero’s unique response to a Caribbean use of colour and spontaneous juxtapositions in the urban sphere. This comes through in the fields of colour, and the series of delicate, intuitive lines.
Herrero embraces an intuitive approach that creates opportunities to act responsively to site. Herrero was recently part of Plug In ICA’s STAGES: Drawing the Curtain where he created a site-specific installation on the floor connecting City Hall and the Centennial Concert Hall. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale where he received a special prize for Young Artists in 2001. Since then he has shown to much acclaim at the Havana Biennial (2003); the Aichi World Expo, Nagoya, Japan (2005); Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami (2008); Museum of Latin American Art, Los Angeles (2012), Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain (2013), Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (2017); and Sies + Hoke, Dusseldorf (2017) who also recently published a 300-page monograph about his work. Herrero lives and works in San José, Costa Rica.Available for purchase at the Plug In ICA 2017 Gala & Art Auction on November 4, 2017.
