Topologies

2016 | Ink on cotton paper | 11.6” x 11.6” x 1.5” | courtesy of the artist

Reserve: $1200

Working in video, photography and drawing, artist Jean-Paul Kelly questions the limits of representation by examining complex associations in the production, reception and circulation of documentary material. Kelly received a Masters of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons.) from Western University. His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and festivals, such as the Delfina Foundation (London); Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus); The Power Plant (Toronto); International Film Festival Rotterdam; New York Film Festival; and Toronto International Film Festival. He received the 2014 Kazuko Trust Award from the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Kelly lives and works in Toronto.

Jean-Paul Kelly’s theoretically informed video and photographic works, like his drawings, nudge at the very act of documentary representation. In the way constituent parts are irregularly interrelated and unaffected by the continuous change of shape, or form, Kelly’s ink drawing, titled Topologies, renders an intricately deformed line work that becomes an object in its own right.

The work of artist Jean-Paul Kelly often examines the relationship between materiality and perception, exploring the limits of representation. Producing video, photo-based work and drawings, his practice consists of cinematic reference, home movies, cartoons, digital compositing and performance. Kelly received a Masters of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons.) from the University of Western Ontario (Western University). He is a member of Pleasure Dome, an experimental film and video programming collective. His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and festivals in Europe, Asia and North America, such as the Center for the Arts, Columbus; The Power Plant (Toronto); New York Film Festival, New York; and the Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul. Kelly lives and works in Toronto.
