Paul Robles | Punctured Life (Hydro)
2016 | collage/ cut paper | 8.5 x 11 in
Delicate, intentional cuts overlay collaged images that present and prod representations of masculinity and sexuality. A central section of negative space creates movement in the image, which could potentially be viewed from multiple perspectives.
Born in the Phillipines, Paul Robles is a Winnipeg based artist largely known for his acclaimed origami cut paper works. Exploring themes of race, gender, and cultural identity, Robles’ paper works maintain a careful tension between tradition, delicacy, trauma and grief. Robles received his BFA from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art in 1996 and a BA in Sociology from the University of Winnipeg in 1992. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group presentations, including My Monument, Gallery 1C03, Winnipeg; Looking Up: Contemporary Connections with Inuit Art, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg; Pamilya, Paul Robles & Friends, Semai Gallery, Winnipeg; and Implausible Paradise, the Drake Hotel, Toronto. In 2011, Robles participated in Plug In ICA’s 2011 Summer Institute Residency.
