Untitled (Black and White Studies)
2018 | Color Photograph | 20 x 20 | C Print
Unlike Xaveria Simmons’ often staged and performative photo works (that at times include re-photographed archival images) the photo here is an isolated found moment. The year it was taken is uncertain. The image is out of focus but just beyond clear definition. However, it is clear enough that the mind can elaborate through the blur. In this image, Simmons’ penchant for the fluidity of abstraction is employed. What we see is at once in view yet indeterminate.
Xaveria Simmons is an interdisciplinary artist who utilizes photography, sound, performance, installation, and sculpture. Her work is rooted in experience, memory, abstraction, present and future histories—shifting notions surrounding landscape and character development. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bard College and completed further study through the Whitney Art Museum’s independent study program. She has exhibited work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Studio Museum, Harlem; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.
