Ian August | Harlequin
2016 | acrylic on paper | 27.75 x 37.5 in (framed)

This work is perfect. The stark black background of Ian August’s Harlequin sets the impeccable scene for the pantomime’s colourful and gestural body to carefully rest within it. This large acrylic painting on paper captures August’s sensitive painting skills, which are both opulent and minimal.

Ian August is an artist based in Winnipeg largely working in painting, video, and sculpture. August’s artistic practice is deeply engaged with modernist theory related to the Bauhaus school and modernist architecture, exploring the relationship between the formalist qualities of Bauhausian structures and modernist abstract painting. August’s work is also heavily focused on the dialogue between painting and sculpture, often using the construction of structures and models within his painting process. August received his MFA from York University, and his BFA, honours from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art. His work has been the subject of many solo exhibitions, including Plunder Dupes, Actual Gallery, Winnipeg; Re: Build Them, Gallery 1C03, Winnipeg; and Big Ideas, Images, and Distorted Facts, Golden City Gallery, Winnipeg. His work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions, recently including All of a Sudden, Platform Centre for Photographic and Digital Arts, Winnipeg.
