Freya Björg Olafson | Contortion Date
2010, signed 2016 | graphite on paper | 8.5 x 11 in

Contortion Date is a graphite work by Winnipeg-based intermedia artist Freya Olafson, which places a spatially decontextualized, contorted female figure that gazes back at the viewer. Offering a pleasant discomfort where minimal lines meet maximal effort. Classically trained in Ballet, Olafson merges formal training with a unique contemporary art practice that has received praise and recognition across Canada, in Athens, the United States and Ecuador.

Freya Björg Olafson is a Winnipeg based intermedia artist whose practice spans video, audio, painting, and performance. Through her prolific installations, videos and choreographic work, Freya’s practice explores the body and its relationship to architectural and virtual spaces. Her works are rooted in both her formal training with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Winnipeg; the School of Contemporary Dancers, Winnipeg; the University of Manitoba’s School of Art; and the Transart Institute in Krems, Austria from which she holds her MFA in New Media art. Her work has been presented and exhibited internationally at venues such as SECCA - SouthEastern Center for Contemporary Art, North Carolina; OchoYmedio / Alas de la Danza, Quito, Guayaquil; The National Arts Center, Ottawa; Tangente – Laboratoire des Movements Contemporains, Montreal; Sequences Real Time Media Arts Festival, Iceland; and Medea Electronique / Onassis Cultural Center, Athens. Freya’s solo performance AVATAR received the ‘Buddies In Bad Times Vanguard Award’ at the Summerworks Theatre Festival in Toronto and toured across 7 provinces in Canada, 4 states in the United States, and three cities in Ecuador.
