Jeremy Shaw | Degenerative Imaging (3 Years Substance Abuse)
2015 | uv print on glow-in-the-dark vinyl on dibond | 24.75 x 28.75 in

Shaw’s interest in altered mental states is immediate in this large-scale UV print, which uses glow-in-the-dark vinyl, mounted on dibond. Degenerative Imaging (3 Years Substance Abuse) confronts viewers with the physiological effects of altered states. The materials and techniques Shaw employs produce a visually pleasing and troubling image.

Jeremy Shaw is a Berlin-based artist born in North Vancouver whose work explores altered mental states, focusing on the aesthetic and scientific valences of psychedelics. Shaw works primarily in video and Kirlian photography, a technique used to capture electrical discharges. He graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2000. Shaw’s work has been exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions, most recently including Medium-Based Time, Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; Neo-Tokyo, Modern Art Museum of Tokyo, Tokyo; and Best Minds, MoMA PS1, New York. Shaw also records music under his own name and as Circlesquar. His discography includes Songs About Dancing And Drugs, Fight Sounds EP, and Variation FQ, a soundtrack to accompany the installation by the same name shown at Schinkel Pavilion, Berlin in 2013. Shaw’s artwork is represented by KÖNIG GALERIE, Berlin.
