Kristin Nelson | The Donation Series
2013 | cotton | 8.5 x 11 in

Aesthetics clash with materials in this work by accomplished Winnipeg-based artist Kristin Nelson, who often borrows the form and aesthetics of mundane materials culled from daily life. She calls to attention labour and our unsettle relationship with the familiar. This work is visually and materially pleasing with conceptual intentionality that incorporates the distribution directly into the work.

Kristin Nelson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Winnipeg. Her recent artistic practice spans textile, performance, video, and sculpture. Through the processes of examination, recontextualization and recreation, Nelson’s work explores the transformation of everyday objects into art objects, often discussing themes of labor, production, and time. Nelson received her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, and her MFA from Concordia University, Montreal. She is the recipient of many awards and grants, and recently completed a three month Canada Council International Residency at Artspace in Sydney, Australia. Recent solo exhibitions of her work include Make Work, Actual Gallery, Winnipeg, and Make-Soft, RAW Gallery, Winnipeg. Nelson has been featured in numerous group exhibitions including Roche, papier, ciseaux, La Maison des Artistes Visuels Francophones, Winnipeg; Ras le Bol!, Skol Centre d’art Actuels, Montreal; and Collision 10 at Parisian Laundry, Montreal. She is represented by Lisa Kehler Art + Projects, Winnipeg.
