Mark Neufeld | Moving Sculpture 1
2012 | oil on canvas | 20 x 26 in

This gestural painting is from a larger body of work Re-Enactments that delves into Winnipeg’s colonial past.  The image captures a performative moment where an art-handler positions a somewhat generic bronze sculpture of a cowboy riding a bucking horse. The white gloves asserting the sculpture’s status as fine art while Neufeld’s painting renders its details flat.

Mark Neufeld is a Winnipeg based multidisciplinary artist whose practice incorporates a range of media and techniques, including installation, painting, performance and found object. Neufeld’s work engages history and place, often exploring historical imagery as a means of understanding and interpreting geographical place and culture. Neufeld received his BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, and his MFA from the University of Victoria. Neufeld’s work has been exhibited in many solo presentations, including A Performance With Two Sculptures, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge; the Undiscovered Continent, Deluge Contemporary, Victoria; and the Greenhorn at Atelierhof Kreuzberg, Berlin.
